he East Tennessee Victims' Rights Task Force is an umbrella organization comprised of social service groups, private citizens, victims of crime, and representatives from the criminal justice system. The Task Force is designed to combine the general interest of its membership in victims' rights and to promote the recommendations of the President's Task Force on Victims of Crime. These recommendations include:
- Promote state victims compensation funds and the awareness thereof.
- Promote the need for sensitivity regarding crime victims by police, medical personnel and prosecutors.
- Promote the Victim-Witness Coordinator program of the criminal justice system.
- Insure that the views of the victims of violent crime are made known to the judicial system.
- Promote an awareness to all segments of the criminal justice system and society in general as to the profound impact that violent crime has on both victims and their families.
The Task Force goals, simply stated, are to promote public and governmental awareness of the needs of victims of crime and to advocate for victims' rights in East Tennessee.
We must make government and the public more sensitive to the needs of victims. We must also strive to insure that individuals victimized by crime will not be victimized by the very system that exists to protect them.
